I just need to vent about irresponsible people getting baby chicks for Easter. Yesterday, only 1 day after Easter I took in 11 baby chicks because people in the city thought they were cute but had no clue how to take care of them. One man actually said the chicks were getting big and jumping out of the box he had them in. DUH! Animals grow, who knew. I just got my chicken house finished a few weeks ago and bought a few chicks planning to order more in a few weeks from my catalog. I like to raise rare breeds. I am more than happy to take the chicks, it's just upsetting that some farm is selling them to people without letting them know how much work it is to care for them. I've raised lots of babies and am very good at it. I think it would be great for someone in the city to have 1 or 2 hens for eggs but these people are getting 8 chicks thinking it will be neat for the kids. What do they need 8 eggs a day for? That is a lot of eggs real fast assuming you get all hens which you never do even with a pullet order. These people had no idea what breed the chicks were and had no idea what a straight run or a pullet was. 4 of the chicks are Bantams, although cute, not good for eggs. I need to put an ad in the paper every year before Easter. Baby chicks grow REALLY FAST! They stink REALLY BAD! They start to fly about 2 weeks old and will get out of your box. Cardboard boxes make a big mess! They get butt ugly after 2 weeks old until their feathers grow all the way in. TWO chicks maximum for a backyard. You will get a rooster, everyone does and they are loud and can be very mean. Chickens poop on EVERYTHING!
Thanks, I feel better now. I really love raising them, I just can't stand dumb people.
